The 20th century, for both better and worse, is over. We need to let it go. We're seventeen years into a new century and it's time to stop thinking the old way.
Data War is not like the Cold War, nor is it like World War Two. “Cyber attacks” are not like the siege of Leningrad or the invasion of Normandy. All such metaphors have been overridden by time and are wrong. They stand opposed to an accurate understanding of the current situation.
The world if intelligence has changed and the players have changed. Ignoring change is always the easiest thing to do, but seldom is it a wise thing to do.
This book was written from the trenches of the new data wars. It offers a raw, apolitical view of what is happening and where the practice of intelligence is headed.

Things change. This is a short read and well worth it if you are not an aware individual. If you have a glimpse of the whole picture of history and where we can head (or are heading) as a civilization you should come away from this read with new insights.Product details

The New Age of Intelligence edition by Paul Rosenberg Jonathan Logan Politics Social Sciences eBooks Reviews
“If you know what I'm doing to you, and for what purposes, you will be able to adapt to the manipulation and undermine it.’’
Knowledge is power - the power to protect your mind!
“And that's why the people who know about this subject aren't talking. To be very blunt about it, to manipulate well is to hijack another person's free will. When perception is shaped by a manipulator he will, through it, shape your reaction to it. And, sadly, this is what's now being done to nearly every person in the West. The new world of data-based intelligence has delivered this capability, and no castle-dweller worth the name would ever disregard such power, or fail to use it above all other powers.’’
Free will, like any treasure, can be lost or stolen!
“This is why we've maintained that it is crucial in our time to willfully create yourself. Because if you don't, someone else will do it for you.’’
‘Willfully create yourself’! Who does that?
How?
“The core issue of defense has thus become individual human will. Those who can exercise their will can protect themselves with powerful defensive weapons.’’
‘Using your individual will’ is a mental weapon!
“Those who are unable to exercise their wills (outside the lines drawn by authority) will be fully unprotected and easy game. Strangely, the situation really does resemble The Matrix (the 1999 movie) Those who are able to handle reality can protect themselves, but those who cannot exercise their wills are “lived” by the network mediators, and turned into Agent Smiths where and when the mediators wish. How often it is, then, that the heaven or hell of human life comes back to simple yet profound virtues and vices.’’
‘Unable to use their will’ can be caught alive!

“To close this chapter, we turn to Alan Bloom, and a passage from his The Closing of The American Mind
‘The most successful tyranny is not the one that uses force to assure uniformity but the one that removes the awareness of other possibilities, that makes it seem inconceivable that other ways are viable, that removes the sense that there is an outside.’
This, and little more, is the role of the state in the 21st century.’’
‘No possible option’! We have to do it this way! Everyone just . . . just . . . knows this! How get this unity?
“In other words, the people must be deprived of any independent sense of vision, of any sense of purpose, save for that which is authorized. And, of course, this is precisely what has been imposed upon the general Western populace for the past generation. Great goals have either been relegated to the distant future, appearing only in fiction, or have been rolled into the state and its glorious “democracy.” Without vision, however (and as the Bible notes), the people perish. People with no sense of vision, no overarching sense of a worthy and righteous purpose, stagnate.’’
What ‘vision’ does this work offer?
“There is further a fundamental fact that is forgotten
“The entire Western world rests –whether people realize it or not –on a foundation that glorifies breaks from the status quo and the forging of parallel paths. That, at the beginning, is precisely what Christianity was, and however much it has sold itself to the state, its roots go back to radicals breaking away from the great power of their day.’’
(Remember - Christians thrown to lions for rejecting emperor worship)
“The greatest expressions of that ideal come to us from the mouth of Jesus, including this one
“That which is highly esteemed among men is an abomination in the eyes of God.”
“Judaism was the start of this, of course, with its insistence that God speaks to the humble rather than the mighty, and the insistence that justice stands above the ruler. These are Judeo-Christian fundamentals, and they remain, no matter how badly people are distracted with doctrines of the day and endless theological arguments. Furthermore, the world contains some 2.4 billion people who claim to care about these ideas. If and when they begin to turn from their usual doctrinal quagmires and return to their “not aligned with power” roots, the page turns. Changes may be arriving already.’’
Well . . . real, genuine Christianity is difficult, ‘claim’ is the key word. Think French Revolution, Russian Revolution, Nazi Germany. All ‘Christian’ well . . . maybe not.
This short work easy to absorb.
Persuasive, reasonable, thoughtful and motivating.
Written for general reader, not scholars
Twenty notes (linked)
Few photographs
No bibliography
(See also “History of the rise and influence of the spirit of rationalism in Europe” (1865) by William Edward Hartpole Lecky. Fundamentally same argument, but done in the dense, erudite style of nineteenth century. Also, “Propaganda’’ by Jacques Ellul. Psychological/philosophical analysis of mental manipulation. Great!)
Right on the money. What's described so aptly in this book is happening now and it's only going to get worse.
That advice is even more pertinent today than it was fifty years ago in the 60s. When you're ready to wake up and see the world for what it really is, this book is a good place to start.
I'll make this review as brief as possible.
Be warned; this book is not rainbows and butterflies. This book is a hard look at a future that can be avoided only through vigilance and dedication. At only 55 pages, I read it in one sitting, and agree with every word. If I had the resources I would buy hundreds of these books and distribute them to people freely.
Ten years ago, I would consider these ideas to be a conspiracy.
Now I am aware they just sound horrific for most people and are based on facts I have independently verified.
I am aware of being a target of social networks & big data.
The question is what kind of sensitive information the big data can deduct about me from all public information I feed their systems ( the social networks)?
A must read for everyone. As terrifying as The Black Swan by Nassim Nicholas Taleb
This book was a confirmation of my understanding of our current society. Big Data led me to this book, but I have to question what I have just read. Maybe I am the one that is blind!
Things change. This is a short read and well worth it if you are not an aware individual. If you have a glimpse of the whole picture of history and where we can head (or are heading) as a civilization you should come away from this read with new insights.
